Film Shot One -
"WolfWalkers" (2020)
One of three Film Poses for Task Two for Modelling to Camera.

The first film shot I chose was from WolfWalkers, a 2D animated film. The pose I chose was the one above with two characters Mebh (left) and Robyn (right), with two other important assets of a bird on Robyn’s arm and the log they sit on.

I began with modelling the bird, which may have been an error on my part. I mapped out the different shapes the bird could be made of, and I limited it down to spheres, cylinders and cones. The body and wings were initially spheres which I used Boolean Difference to cut them into their specific shapes, and the beak was a cone used.
The log was fairly simple. Creating a Cylinder polygon, entering into face mode, and (using soft select) lifting the centre faces to form a similar shape. Then I referenced the two character rigs (appropriate to their size and dimensions) into the scene and modelled the assets around them and around their sizes. I am fairly proud of how Robyn and the bird’s poses were translated, and I think they capture the original poses well.
After my review with my tutor, I was drawn to how there was still a fair amount of assets lacking from the shot. So I decided to add trees in the background: quite simple shapes, but I felt it really added depth to the distance and made the characters seem a lot closer.
This work really did allow me to realise this work was important for test animations, in conveying concept art and how 2D animation can translate differently to 3D animation. 2D drawings and ideas require an understanding of exaggeration, while 3D requires a closer analysis of life to recreate.
