Task Eight: Chain Animation

In comparison to Task Seven, I did learn some more things with the Chain Animation. I tried to complete the Chain Animation in a similar way to the Pendulum: rotating the polygons and positioning them at their extremes of each swing, and the midpoint of the swing. However, the chains moved too uniformly, which did not allow for any believability.

To resolve this issue, I learned about ‘Offsetting’: a method where certain values translate and/or rotate at a consistent difference in frames, but with the same values it previously had. I tested a gap of one frame between each chain value, and it was effective but not immediately believable. I attempted a two-frame offset, and the animation became far more believable than I was anticipating.

It did raise the question in my mind if a larger offset meant better Chain animation. Attempting three-frame and four-frame offsets, it did not improve the animation but rather made it far more unbelievable.

I really enjoyed rigging for a cartoon character. I think it’s really fun and might be an area I’ll explore in the future. I enjoyed...
